Members of the Conyngham United Methodist Church held various fundraisers to attend the Youth Rally in Ocean City, Maryland. The students attended the Pen/Del/Mar Youth Rally which drew more than 4,000 participants from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Virginia.

Penn State Wilkes-Barre Chancellor Charles H. Davis offered an overview of the campus' 100 years of history as a community partner in the Wyoming Valley and shared the formula for future successes with the University's Board of Trustees, as part of the board's regular summer meeting. In May 1915, two Penn State graduates, reacting to the needs of the local anthracite mining industry, proposed the development of a Penn State engineering center in Wilkes-Barre.

Butler Township supervisors looking for ways to speed up recycling

People are so eager to recycle in Butler Township that they wait in traffic a half-hour or longer to enter the center on 150 W. Foothills Drive. To reduce the wait, the township supervisors are considering hiring more workers, asking for volunteers and allowing people to unload recyclables without help.

Judge grants inmate’s wish to ‘die with dignity,’ refuses to order transfusions

In an order made public Monday, Judge Richard A. Gray denied the request of the Department of Corrections to force Gail Schneider to undergo blood transfusions and related care and testing. Schneider, 46, of Berwick, suffers from aplastic anemia, a condition characterized by bone marrow not producing sufficient red blood cells to maintain life.

Drums man dies in Sugarloaf Twp. wreck

A Drums man was killed early this morning when his car crashed into a utility pole and a tree in Sugarloaf Township. Jason John Shulenski, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene in the area of 240 Conyngham-Drums Road, according to state police at Hazleton.

Water Main Break Closes Some County Buildings

The Luzerne Courthouse and the county annex buildings are closed for the day because both were without water Tuesday morning. Officials also say water was turned back on at the Luzerne County courthouse around 9:45 a.m. and soon after, water was turned back on at the annex.
